This morning I woke up a little later than I normally do. I usually set my alarm for 7, but almost always wake up before it goes off. Well, last night I didn't set the alarm and woke up at 7:30. Not terrribly late, but we had to finish a little homework and practice piano before school. I went and got the kids up and got things moving for breakfast. I got flustered because the kids were moving like snails...just doing enough to keep me from freaking out, but not enough to be out the door on time. I had to constantly remind them of what they should be doing: brushing teeth, gathering homework, shoes and socks, etc. Okay, I'll admit it, I was freaking out by the time they left. I yelled for the last 1/2 hour they were home. They knew what they needed to get done, but because they don't care if they're late or not, they were just taking their sweet time about getting ready.
I finally tell them that whoever is not in the car in 3 minutes will be grounded after school. I go out to the van and load all my DI crap into the van because I've been on a cleaning spree, call my neighbor to go and pick up her junk, get Natalie buckled, load the scooters into the back so the kids can ride them home after school and I finally get in. I buckle my seat belt and am totally frazzled. I put the van into reverse and proceed to backing out.
WHAM!!
The first thought that went through my head was "I just ran over some kids bike, great." I wasn't, however, thinking: "I just ran into my own husbands car." Which, was the case. No, I didn't hit a pole at the bank or the gas station. I hit my own husbands car. I left a huge scratch on the side of my van and a good sized dent in Kim's front fender. Ugh!! I am pretty much tearing up at this point. I know I didn't look in my mirrors and that Kim's gonna be annoyed. I go in and tell him what I did and sure enough he says: "Didn't you look in your mirrors? It could have been one of the kids." To which I reply, kind of annoyed at this point: "I knew it wasn't one of the kids, they were all in the car, getting yelled at."
So, I drive off, checking my mirrors first, to take the kids to school. They are just about late at this point. As I'm driving I'm wondering to myself why Kim even parks in the driveway, right behind me. I almost always have to leave before him, and we have a second driveway that's on the other side of the house! When I get home I ask him this. He says that it's because where he parks now is closer to the door (by about 10 feet) and it's more convenient. UGH!
I accept full responsibility for being a bad driver this morning. I should have checked my mirrors. I'm frazzled and if I don't figure out some great new way to get my kids to listen to me, then I fully expect to have a few more days like this morning. I have also learned a lesson here: maybe the "idiot" who has a dent in the side of their car was frazzled too.
*On a side note: I cannot post a picture of my damage. My husband has since taken it to a body shop to see if we can somehow seal the huge scratch I made so that the paint will not continue to chip away.
*On a second side note: This new decoration that I have made on my van comes after a new huge chip in the windshield on Monday which will likely spider into a nice web-like pattern within a few days....

Your poor van, newly detailed and now marred. Well, I hate to admit it but I've been in your shoes 3 times over! (when idiots are true idiots, they don't learn very fast) Let's just say that my husband, parents and a babysitter of ours know not to park behind my garage stall. Speaking of garages, I backed into the garage door in HS too, trying to get to school on time!! Ha, forgot about that one... wonder which teacher won the bet that day. Hope my pathetic driving makes you feel a bit better about yours!

As a mother, I'm all about taking personal responsibility. But for future reference...I'm on your side. Kim: Park in the other spot, don't park behind your wife who has all the responsibility of getting the kids to school each and the "stuff" that comes with it. Give her a break!!!
Sorry to hear about your frazzled morning!
One month after marrying Rob, I drove his brand new SUV into the side of our garage and scraped up the whole passenger side. Somehow, he still stayed married to me!
I hope your week got better after Wednesday!
Yikes!!! I can just see Kim's face. Yeah, I'm sure you remember my backing into the fire hydrant story...after all is said and done all they are are stories anyhow.
Everyone has at least one. Here's an idea...Make the kids get up 15 minutes earlier each time they are late...when they are getting up at 5:30am I'm sure they'll have plenty of time to get their stuff done. ;) Or better yet set an alarm earlier for them so you still get your beauty sleep.
Oh, No! Well, I guess that's what insurance is for, right? Like you needed that 'extra' stress! I'm feeling for you!
You're farther behind on your blog than I am on mine. What gives??
I think yours is my favorite blog to read...so get goin on it, would ya?
